I’m fine with guns. I’m fine with people owning guns. I’m not fine with pointing them at people who weren’t even coming to your place, especially yelling at them with your finger on the trigger.

I mentioned a few months ago that now would be a very bad time to decide you want to be a gun fighter. This looks to be the first time these morons have ever held these guns. If they actually had to use them, they’d get shot very quickly. People who actually train for this put more rounds down range in a day than they’ve probably shot in their entire lives.

No body armor, and some rather wide torsos to aim for.

They’re lucky no one they pointed those guns at were carrying. They basically gave them the green light to kill them.

Personal injury lawyers, surprising. Talk about dirty money. When people screech “eat the rich”, this is who they are talking about. The French handled such people the right way, once, people who also had gaudy homes (today I read a blurb about the house, ostentatious).

Look how the feckless thing has her finger on the trigger - they need some kind of day of reckoning. I might not hope for much from the state that contains Ferguson.

I was thinking something similar.  2 guns vs how many could be in a “mob”?  They might take out a couple (I doubt their marksmanship skills) before they are turned to Swiss cheese, then the house is looted and burned.

This is why I want to leave here.

Our gun laws are insane, the combination of a castle doctrine and a stand your ground law lead people like this to believe that brandishing guns at people walking down your street is perfectly OK.

This also means that if they had shot a protestor there would likely have been no legal consequences for them as all they would have had to do was convince a prosecutor they were afraid.

I’ve also worked for people that live in that neighborhood and it really is that insanely rich and they will call the police on you for walking down their sidewalk.

Edit: we also have permitless concealed carry, open carry and no background checks for firearm sales outside a FFL. There are a lot of guns here and a lot of untrained idiots like this.

If they had opened fire then the consequences for each of them would’ve been interesting. The way that rifle is being held is almost asking for the missu s to get a bullet or six in the arse...and that pistol is going to get dropped and probably shoot someone in the foot.

I laughed about that story I related earlier today about some mother and her kid looking like they wanted to break out the shotgun to mow me down for idling in front of their house while eating a power bar but now it doesn’t seem so funny. They looked like the genuinely feared for their safety, which is, I don’t know, stupid and wrong? Man, people who drive red compacts and idle in front of your house at 6 oclock in the afternoon, amiright?

At least those hillbilly yahoos a few weeks ago carrying rifles on their lawns while protesters marched by had some basic firearms training.

They had their rifles in the down position, proper handling, trigger discipline, etc. These idiots look like they have zero clue on how to hold a firearm, the wife with one hand and finger on the trigger, the husband holding the rifle like a 80s war movie.

Oh well, at least they have been exposed for the idiots they are.

It’s nuts, there’s this culture of fear whipped up by the gun lobby that everyone wants to hurt you and  the only way to protect yourself is with a weapon. In the real world you’re more likely to be harmed than to protect yourself if there’s a gun in the house.

I am an avid sportsman and own many firearms but this unrestricted atmosphere is insane and leads to a lot of people getting hurt.

Havent really seen anything definite on the crowd itself, but it is true that they dont have a right to prevent trespass if they do not own the property in question. Ironically one of the first things they teach you in self defense is optics. Everybody seems to be making some big assumptions about the crowd, either full violent or full peaceful.

Also I continue to ask that people please put politics behind a header. It is a simple request  that many people follow just fine.

I don’t hate guns; it’s a way of life for lots of my friends though I personally have never shot one. But, your right to arms does not trump someone’s right to life and liberty. Legitimate question for those with more information / stronger opinions than I:

Had these two dingbats just stood on their porch, guns in  their hands or at their sides, but not pointed at anyone, would there be a (major) moral or legal issue? MO is an open carry state I believe, so I think that this would be permissible.

Of course that’s not what happened and they both came off unhinged and dangerous. Often silence is more powerful than words.

The man was not intentionally aiming his rifle at anyone, he didn’t commit any crime. The woman pointing the pistol at the crowd could be guilty of assault depending on if she reasonably feared for her life at the time. I agree they both could benefit greatly from just a smidge of training.

The legal issues regarding this kind of situation are very tricky. A mob is potentially a very deadly entity, and it’s very difficult to ascertain the intentions of a mob, especially after they break through a gate into your private community. Once they’re within 20 feet of you, they can overrun and kill you before you could even draw and fire a pistol. An unarmed mob is every bit as dangerous as a single person armed with a gun.

The gun lobby didn’t lift a finger to catalyze the record gun sales we’ve seen in the past several months. They didn’t have to. Rational adult fears (pandemic, impending economic collapse, rioting mobs, police departments disbanding ) and anti-gun politicians sell more guns than advertisements ever could.

“ Ironically one of the first things they teach you in self defense is optics.”

In that vein, the first thing I was taught in the way of self defense as a civilian (my military training not withstanding) is that its just that - defense of yourself and defense of your family. Anything beyond that, including defending your property or material possessions, is not “self” defense. I had a very experienced, competent instructor and his advice was that even in our state, a castle doctrine / stand your ground state, the best thing you can do is hole up in your bedroom with your family and warn them off. His reasoning is that any other action could be interpreted by a DA, and by extension a jury, that you were actively looking for trouble, seeking out someone to shoot. Given that we’re in a stand your ground state you might eventually win that court case, but its going to drain you of your time, sanity, financial resources, etc. Nevermind the fact  that you have to live with the consequences of your actions.

Only because the NRA has lain that groundwork for decades.  Their answer to fear - buy a gun it's the only thing that can keep you safe when it has next to zero to do with you staying safe. You're more likely to be harmed if there's a gun in your house than be protected by it.

The NRA also does far more whipping of sales frenzy around the threat of of democratic ladership than anything Democrats havr actually done . The line from the NRA during the Obama administration was constantly ‘obama will take your guns’ yet no su bstantial piece of legislative action was undertaken. The only initiative was to implement universal background checks which the vast majority of people support.

As someone who has paid good money for gunfighting hardware and software, people like them remind me why I only want me and mine owning guns (the NFA keeps the 2nd Amendment from combating actual tyranny).

You’re biggest weapon is your brain. As these people have put on display, some of us are more endowed than others.

Home defense 101 is that you never leave your house. Unless you’re house is on fire, you stay inside . Knowing there’s a “mob” walking by would be a reinforcing factor. If you’re out numbered , the last thing you want to do is attract attention. Unless you’re a cop or a national guardsman , you’re going to jail for shooting unarmed protestors.

These people were trying to intimidate people. Guns don’t really do that. You should only draw a gun if you need to kill someone.

“ not intentionally aiming his rifle at anyone”

When the gun is leveled at other people that constitutes aiming a weapon at people, intentional or not. If he didn’t want to aim his weapon at people he should have had it in a patrol carry or at port arms position.

Read the article, trust me, its worth your time. He states that his wife has no familiarity with guns (which is alreadu obvious). But if thats true, why the hell were they out there?

Also, as best as I can tell, the mob of people were on common property, which they have no duty or even right to defend. Even if they weren’t, there was no indication they were acting aggressively towards the couple or their property, merely using it as a pass through to get to the mayors.

Is trespassing wrong? Absolutely. Is it worth going out and brandishing weapons over? Probably not.

Im all for both gun ownership and self defense but these people acted absolutely   recklessly.

You do know that the NRA is a grassroots-funded organization, right? The overwhelming majority of their funding comes from small individual donations from private individuals.

That being said, I’ve been an avid gun enthusiast since the mid 2000s and have never joined the NRA. They compromise too much. Coming from the inside of the enthusiast community, the NRA as an organization has zero influence on people buying guns, both first-time buyers and long-time owners.

You’re more likely to be harmed if there’s a gun in your house than be protected by it.

The Kellermann study from which that conclusion is drawn, was debunked decades ago. A more accurate statement would be “You’re more likely to be harmed if there is a gun-owning criminal living in your house than if there isn’t.” Lawful firearm ownership carries no such increase in statistical risk.

I can understand the fear that a wealthy, white, personal injury lawyer might have in such a situation.   Bad decision to push the issue at all, much less come out with his toys.  Wife is going to smack herself in the head if she fires that small, personal protection 9mm the way she is holding it and he wouldn’t hit sh!t hip firing what appears to be an AR-15 like that....  My first reaction is that they were in the middle of happy hour when the protesters made their way past...

Yes, this is a tautology. Pointing a weapon is pointing a weapon. Intent is a necessary component of assault.

Even if they weren’t, there was no indication they were acting aggressively towards the couple or their property, merely using it as a pass through to get to the mayors.

I consider destroying a gate to gain access to private property, an aggressive act.

I’m not an expert and laws vary by state. If they have their guns holstered, that fits “open carry” and they’re OK. If they are holding their guns not aimed at anyone, that sounds illegal; brandishing or menacing or something like that.

You can’t holster a rifle and I don’t want to watch the video but in the still shots they both look threatening the way they’re holding. Unlike the white extremists nutjobs who carried long guns into the MI capitol.

I’m curious what their thought process was. If they were truly in fear of their lives, let’s step outside and confront a mob of unknown armament? How did they possibly think this could end well for anyone?

With CO’s castle doctrine, if I’m in my house and someone enters without my consent, I’m pretty much free to shoot him without consequences. The moment I step outside with a gun, I better be thinking about what exactly I’m doing more than those two idiots did.

If they were truly in fear for their lives, stay in the house, shoot anyone who breaks in, and they’re good.

The m ost recent numbers have 16,214 murders per year by all forms and 23,854 suicides by gun per year. These numbers do not count accidents either which would account for a higher number.

Aso the NRA receives less that half of it’s funding from membership donations.

Guns are a good thing, but they need restrictions and regulations along with training and tests. They are extremely dangerous and need to be treated as such.

One of the reasons there isn't good numbers is that the NRA lobbied into law a prohibition on federal funds being used to gather statistics on firearm injuries and deaths.

Even if they came out low ready, it doesnt make sense with that group of people.  If it was me, I’d call the cops lock my wife and kid in the safest room and wait and see if they pass by, I pray to God that I will never have to use my guns for anything other than putting holes in paper.

Unless you’re a cop or a national guardsman, you’re going to jail for shooting unarmed protestors.

Not necessarily true. Unarmed mobs are just as deadly as armed people. A reasonable fear for your life does not depend strictly on your assailant being armed. In the end, that’s up to a jury to decide, if a district attorney or grand jury decides to indict.

These people were trying to intimidate people. Guns don’t really do that.

They absolutely do. Threat of deadly force (with an assist from a massive force multiplier like a firearm) is the basis upon which the entire legal system is founded. Why do people pay taxes and fines? Out of the goodness of their hearts? No, because if they don’t, armed men will eventually show up to arrest them.

Aso the NRA receives less that half of it’s funding from membership donations.

This is a disingenuous statement because membership dues are not donations, they are dues. Donations are separate and account for more than half.

Guns are a good thing, but they need restrictions and regulations along with training and tests. They are extremely dangerous and need to be treated as such.

They’re already the most heavily-regulated consumer products in the United States. Over 20,000 firearm laws on the books and counting. The problem with training and tests is that firearm ownership is a right, not a privilege. Mandatory training and testing is quite literally the same as requiring training and a test to vote. I would be very much in favor of at least a brief mandatory firearms safety class taught in public schools though.

One of the reasons there isn’t good numbers is that the NRA lobbied into law a prohibition on federal funds being used to gather statistics on firearm injuries and deaths.

Strictly speaking it wasn’t prohibited, and Congress clarified in 2018 that it is not prohibited so there is funding earmarked in the 2020 federal budget for studying gun violence. I look forward to the inevitable back and forth manipulations of the raw data, and the inevitable conclusion that gun violence is strongly correlated to poverty and other criminal activity.

So what counts as breaking and entering, and what doesn’t? It wasn’t a public street as most assume, they broke through a gate, at what point is it considered your “castle”? What about a fenced in yard, a screened in back porch, etc.? Where is the line where someone enters your home? Is a roof a requirement? What about a breezeway connecting your house to garage, or to a guest house/family member’s house? What about a shared hallway in an apartment complex with a secured access door?  Seeing that they busted through somewhere that clearly wasn’t public property and they were clearly not on a public street, I’m curious where the law stands on where your home actually ends. We may find out what Missouri’s take on it is soon enough.

As well, and as a gun owner myself, in California, where I am happy to forego 30-round magazines in order to own semiautomatic rifles, I think these people give the rest of us a bad name and a bad look and I will experience scha denfreude to think of the inconven ience and and expense and damage to Hubby’s reputation that they will not perhaps suffer.

My home is also worth substantially more than it was when I purchased it twenty years ago, in the SF Bay Area. Thanks to Proposition 13, I can still afford the taxes. As I tell geoff above, I am happy to forego 30-round magazines in order to own my semi-automatic rifle. I might not also that as soon as I bought it — a Ruger Mini-14 chambered in 5.56mm — I bought a wooden stock for it so it would look more like a ranch tool than a wannabe Army Man toy. I can still barter for Army Man ammo when the ship hits the span.

I saw reports saying that some of the proteste rs were armed as well. I suspect part of the idiots’ thought process was that if we stay inside, people might start defacing or destroying our property but if we stand out here and show we are armed, they will keep moving. That seems like a stupid idea to me since it appears that the people were not doing anything other than walking down the street in broad daylight, but idiots will idiot.

Had they simply come out and sat on their porch with weapons nearby, I would not have an issue with their actions. But the marching back and forth like they were Foot Guards protecting the Queen of England, along with their poor gun discipline, drives me nuts.

It’s a very interesting case, legally, because it was a private road and sidewalk. I doesn’t look like the protesters were ever technically on these people’s individual property (unless sidewalks are different in a private neighborhood). So, is it legal to point a gun at someone if you’re standing on your property in response to a verbal threat from a privately-owned but -shared space 30 feet away?

Here’s an analogy: a group of kids breaks into your neighborhood pool. You go and tell them to leave, they tell you to shut up and say they’ll kick your ass. Is it legal to point a gun at them?

Did the protestors ever step foot on their personal property? I feel like this is a major distinction.

It was a shared gate/street and I assume sidewalk. If they never actually set foot on these people’s personal property, do they have the right to aim guns at them?

But what’s considered their front door, is a roof required? If you put a wall up around your yard and put a door on it, is that your home? I lived in a boarding house in college, shared common areas, bathrooms, dining room, etc. but private bedroom, owned by the organization that I was a member of. Would the shared areas be considered my home? I see a similar situation here, with a larger area and no roof. There’s a wall, with a door, to shared common areas owned by the organization which they’re paying membership dues to. I can’t quite tell if the entire area is walled off, but if so, other than a roof, what would be the legal difference between that an a boarding house? I didn’t see any other posts on this oppo (probably missed them) , and I didn’t see anywhere on this post that addressed the questions I have. When it comes to the law, I don’t really like “I know it when I see it” types. I’d think being lawyers, they’d know better. [shrug].

I’m assuming it works like other gated communities/HOAs where they’re paying membership dues, but I’m curious because I used to live in a boarding house in college with shared areas.  Would they not legally be considered my home, or would they be?  If they are, would a walled/gated shared area in a HOA also be, or why not and what makes them different?  Public streets or ungated/fenced/walled areas, it’d be relatively clear, but with the gate brings up some questions.

It really is an interesting case. If you watch the video, the gate is open but undamaged at the beginning (unknown if they forced entry, but these may be gates that are only locked at certain hours). Regardless, it’s private property and they are trespassing.

Elsewhere, I used the analogy of a private neighborhood pool. If some kids broke in, and when you confronted them, told you to get lost or they’d kick your ass, are you within your rights to point a gun at them? Seems like quite a stretch...

I once shot a full auto Mini 14 while out in the desert. Some guy had it along with an automatic Uzi. He saw my friend’s veteran plates and let us shoot as much ammo as we wanted. No idea if they were legal or not.

A wood stocked Mini 14 is a great carbine. It didn’t work out too well for him, but Che Guevara rocked one in Bolivia.
